Anderson Wesley Brown (1849-1923)
- 1849 – 1923 (74) (#1 of 4 brothers) Called Father of Rhinelander
Anna A. (Hanchett) Brown House – Zion School (1883 – now Engleman’s 13 Gifts) Second house on lot 1887 - Lawrence College, Spencerian Business College (Milw) and UW Madison – left due to father’s ill health
- 1865 – At the age of 16, AW began his business career when he and WE rented their father’s 320 acre farm near Stevens Point, handling all aspects of the business from hiring the help to selling the crops.
- 1871 – Left Madison to take over the responsibilities of his father’s lumber business.
- 1872 – Cruising northern WI (w/ Anson P. Vaughn) looking for timber lands, saw value in the area of Pelican Rapids.
- 1874 – Purchased 1,500 acres from the State (AW, WE, ED & TW)
- 1875 – AW & WE formed Brown Bros Co. (EO joined in 1882)
- 1878 – Negotiated deal with Milw, Lake Shore & Western RR (Milw to Ontonogan) (JO Thayer agent) - one half of land deeded to RR
- 1882 – Village of Rhinelander formed (part of town of Pelican); RR reached Village; Started construction of Sawmill and Boarding House (Lumber for Boarding House was on first train to village)
- 1885 – Negotiated with Soo Line RR (WD Washburn agent) offered half of remaining land. Soo countered with half of all land. Convinced MLS&W to give part of the land they received. (Probably only time something like this ever happened)
- 1887 – Soo completed line to Village of Rhinelander (2 sawmills then, but 5 more soon added)
- 1890 – Business was incorporated under name Brown Bros Lumber Co. (AW was president for entire time) (AW was in charge of the Camps and timber buying, and WE was in charge of mill operations and marketing of product)
- 1893 – After his wife Helen passed away, ED (Father of AW) moved to Rhinelander with two daughters
- 1917 – Sold mill to Brown Land & Lumber (2 of AW’s sons)

- 1st President of Merchants State Bank
- President of Pelican Boom Co (sorted & delivered logs to the saw mills)
- 1st President of Rhinelander Paper Co.
- Promoted development of agricultural interests before the County had an Agricultural Agent
- Influential in having the subject of Agriculture made a part of curriculum on Oneida County Normal School
- Owner of Tamarack Farm near Sugar Camp (180 acres, buildings and 60 head of Guernsey cattle)
- Building committee during construction of current Court House
- Oneida County Board of Supervisors
- Chairman of the Board of the Town of Pelican
- Youngest daughter married WD Connor Jr of Laona, WI
- Founding member of First Congregational Church
- In Stevens Point – family home was located where UWSP Old Main building is now
