Eisenhower, Dwight D.
Dwight D. Eisenhower : Fishing in Vilas County
In 1946, when Eisenhower was Army chief of staff, he joined his brother's fishing vacation at Moody's Resort on Big Lake in Vilas County, north of Boulder Junction. It was former Allied commander's first vacation since the end of World War II. Eisenhower liked it so much that he took many vacations in the area after that.
How many Rhinelander residents remember when former president (1953-1961) Dwight Eisenhower rode the Flambeau 400 on July 20, 1965 on a fishing trip? Even in 1965, ex-presidents and other VIPs normally rode private jets; however, Mamie detested flying so they rode the train. Railroads were honored to provide luxury transportation gratis to the five-star general credited with winning the war in Europe.
Photo captions: Eisenhower (1890-1969) with wife, Mamie, were the guests of Howard Young, a wealthy New York art dealer, at his Cedar Gate estate in Minocqua. A Secret Service agent looks on as Ike and Mamie prepare to board Pennsylvania Railroad private business car #7507 at the regular Woodruff station stop on August 1, 1965.
