The fancy leaded windows would not have been typical in a house like this. These actually came from the Curren School, now an office building. Fortunately someone had the presence of mind to grab a couple of them when they were replaced with new energy efficient windows and save them so we are able to share them today. The second doorway would not have existed in the early years. Note the wood trim is different, this was put in later in life when this was an apartment building so initially when Mrs. Van Slate had it as a boarding house this would be one room with one door.
Bedroom Highlights
Listed below are a few of the items in this room that you may be interested in learning more about.
Bedwarmer
In the deep freeze of Wisconsin winters, and with a limited amount of heat from the wood stove, one’s bed was often quite frigid before crawling in on a cold night. To remedy this, a bed warmer was filled with water, heated on the kitchen stove and placed under the covers to warm the bed before crawling in for the night.
Stained Glass Windows
This type of stained glass would not have been used in a typical house of the time. These windows came from the Curran School when the windows there were updated to more energy efficient ones. Fortunately, someone had the presence of mind to save them so they could be preserved and made available for us to see today.
